Business Strategy Question #09: What are your goals?

Business Strategy Question #9: What Are Your Goals?Question #9/10

Your business strategy…your big picture view of how YOUR business works…is an essential step in creating a business that supports the lifestyle YOU want to create and the lives you want to transform.

This is Question #9 in a 10 question series of what to ask, and answer, before you choose your business model, decide what programs and products you want to create and how you launch yourself in the world.

And here is a list of the entire 10-question series (in case you want the big picture view)!

If you haven’t answered questions #1-8, I definitely recommend answering those first,  then popping back here to answer this one. Answering the questions in this order helps you get more clarity.

Ah, now you’re getting to the “real” questions Mama

Ya think? I get this one often and have people thinking “geez, really? you want me to answer all this other woo-woo stuff?”

Yup. I do.

Not answering “The 10 Questions” before I started my first business, and my next one and not answering them, again, at least every 6-12 months (or when something big changes) has costs me tens of thousands of dollars out-of-pocket and probably hundreds of thousands in lost business.

I would prefer (if I can make it all about me for a second) that you not learn the lessons from the School of Hard Knocks and Life Lessons.

I would PREFER you do this stuff first and save yourself all that money, time and headaches.

And if you don’t, I’ll love ya bunches and lots and know that there was a reason you learned that way.

And if you DO choose to learn from my mistakes and missteps, I’ll be the first to cheer you on when success (by your definition), comes more quickly than mine did.

Now on to your goals.

So what ARE your goals?

  • What do you want to happen at the end of “x” time?
  • What do you want to see as the result of all your hard work?
  • What would success look like, to YOU?
  • How will you measure success?
  • What frightens you about setting goals (yes, I’ve been goal-a-phobic most of my life…not a path I recommend tho’)
  • Why this goal? How does it make you feel when you’ve gotten “there?”
  • How will you measure your success and what will you do if things get a bit “off course?”

Are you Goal-A-Phobic too?

If so, welcome to the Recovering Goal-A-Phobics Association…an unofficial group of us who are learning how to set goals without having to breathe into a paper bag!

Have you taken a look a why goals scare you? If not, that’s a great place to start.

I know they scared me because “geez, what if I picked the wrong one” and “OMG, what if I fail” or my favorite “what if I didn’t set the bar high enough and I look like a weeny butt?”

Yeah, those are all things that have gotten to me AND what I’ve learned is that without goals, even if I don’t achieve them, I wander around in the woods like a little lost chickie and don’t get anywhere, then wonder how I got “here” and why I’m not where I thought I would be.

Not a pretty sight, believe me!

When I learned to set goals I can get behind (who says you have to be a bazillionaire and have a home with 40,000 square feet to be a success?) and that I break into do-able steps, it made all the difference in the world.

Try it…take a baby step. One little baby step.

Like “Today my goal is to stay out of my email account for at least 15 minutes.

Or “Today I’ll eat lunch at the table instead of my desk.

See, they don’t all have to be huge. And by answering the other questions in this series, you’ll be much more clear about what YOU want, not what someone else wants for you.

THEN you can set a big bodacious goal (if you want to) and step backward through to today to figure out that one do-able step that takes you where you want to be.

And if it changes, doesn’t feel right? Scratch it out and create something different for yourself. YOU’RE the one in charge here and don’t you forget it!

Please share your goals or your fears in the comments

I would love to hear how answering this question solidified, or maybe changed, your perspective on what you do and what you bring to the world. The more you walk through these questions and get kick-ass clear on what you want and why you want it, the faster you can build the business that fits you that beautiful little black dress you’ve got your eye on (or if you’re a guy, maybe you’d prefer a perfect pair of jeans…smile).

Please don’t let technology and business stuff hold you back…that’s “just stuff” that can be handed off to someone else (me, pick me!), learned in a class or dropped by the wayside in favor of something more do-able, for you.

may your day be igKnighted with passionately powerful possibilities!
